Hepburn was born Audrey Kathleen Ruston on May 4, 1929 in Brussels, Belgium. Her mother, Baroness Ella van Heemstra, was a Dutch aristocrat and after divorcing Hepburn’s father, raised her alone as a single mother. She studied ballet and quickly became a “star pupil.” The Nazi’s occupation of the Netherlands during World War II had a significant impact on Hepburn’s family. Hepburn worked with the Dutch resistance by delivering messages and packages, and performed ballet to collect additional funds for the resistance.

Known for her beauty and grace, Hepburn lit up the big screen in film classics such as Breakfast at Tiffany’sRoman Holiday, and My Fair Lady. It was her breakout role in Roman Holiday that would make her an international star. Later in life, she devoted much of her time to humanitarian efforts and worked with UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador.
