The Oklahoma native was born Blake Tollison Shelton on June 18, 1976 to Richard Shelton, a used car salesman, and Dorothy Byrd, a beauty salon owner. His father served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was a member of the Honor Guard. At 14, he lost his older brother, Ritchie, in a tragic car accident. After his death, Shelton was given his brother’s record collection, which helped fuel his love of music. By 15, he had written his first song and began pursuing a career in music as soon as he finished high school.
Since the launch of his debut album, Shelton has sold millions of records and has been nominated for 8 Grammy Awards. He can currently be seen on television as a coach on the hit singing competition show, The Voice.
