Clement Clarke Moore

Do you remember reading the poem “A Visit from St. Nicholas”? On July 15, 1779, author Clement Clarke Moore was born in New York City. The famous poem was first published anonymously in the Troy, New York, Sentinel on December 23, 1823. It wasn’t until years later that Moore acknowledged that he was the poem’s author.

Did you know “A Visit from St. Nicholas” is largely responsible for our conception of Santa Clause today? The poem influenced how we view his physical appearance, the night of his visit, his reindeer and the tradition that he brings toys to children.

Now a holiday staple, almost everyone recognizes these famous first lines of the yuletide classic.

“‘Twas the night before Christmas, when all through the house
Not a creature was stirring, not even a mouse;”

Clement Clarke Moore is connected to over 78 million people in Geni’s World Family Tree. How are you related?
