Profile of the Day: Debbie Reynolds

Debbie Reynolds

Only one day after the death of her daughter, Carrie Fisher, legendary actress Debbie Reynolds passed away on December 28, 2016 at the age of 84.

Reynolds launched to fame during the 1950s with a string of musicals, most notably starring in the classic film Singin’ in the Rain alongside Gene Kelly. Only 19 when she shot the film, Reynolds had never danced professionally before.

She was born Mary Frances Reynolds on April 1, 1932 in El Paso, Texas to Maxine Harmon and Raymond Frances Reynolds, a carpenter for the Southern Pacific Railroad. She signed her first film contract at the age of 16 after winning the Miss Burbank beauty contest.

Over the course of her long career, Reynolds earned two Emmy nominations, a Tony nomination, and an Academy Award nomination for her performance in The Unsinkable Molly Brown.

Sadly, just a day after the death of her daughter, Reynolds suffered a possible stroke at the home of her son, Todd Fisher. In his statement on his mother’s death, Todd said, “She wanted to be with Carrie.”

RIP Debbie Reynolds.
