Dorothea Dix

On April 2, 1802, American activist Dorothea Dix was born. Dix has often been described as “the most effective advocate of humanitarian reform in American mental institutions during the nineteenth century.” She successfully lobbied state legislatures and the U.S. Congress to create the first generation of American mental asylums.
