Elizabeth Barrett Browning

On June 29, 1861, poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning died in Florence, Italy. As one of the most prominent poets of the Victorian Era, Browning’s poetry was widely popular in both England and the United States during her lifetime. In 1846, she secretly married fellow poet Robert Browning against her father’s wishes. Her father disowned her and the couple moved to Italy. Browning was plagued by ill health throughout her life. After suffering from weakness and deteriorating lung function, she died in her husband’s arms.
