Elizabeth was born on September 7, 1533 at Greenwich Palace and was the daughter of Henry VIII of England and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. She was named after her grandmothers, Elizabeth of York and Elizabeth Boleyn. When she was two years old, her mother was executed for adultery and treason.

Elizabeth ascended to the throne after the death of her older half-sister Mary in 1558 and ruled for 44 years. Her long reign is known as the Elizabethan Era and is regarded as time of great cultural prosperity, discovery, and stability.

Dubbed the “Virgin Queen,” Elizabeth never married and had no children. When she died on March 24, 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne.
