Elizabeth was the second child of Henry VIII of England and the daughter of Henry’s second wife, Anne Boleyn. She was only 2 years old when her mother was executed by beheading. Just eleven days after her mother’s death, her father married Jane Seymour, who gave birth to a son, Edward VI.

She succeeded to the throne after the death of her sister Mary I in 1558. Her 44-year reign became known as the “Elizabethan Era” and brought England stability and prosperity. Often referred to as the “golden age” in English history, Elizabeth’s reign ushered in a new age of discovery and a renaissance in culture, music, and literature.

Elizabeth I died on March 24, 1603 at the age of 69. Dubbed the “Virgin Queen,” Elizabeth never married and had no children. Thus, upon her death, James VI of Scotland ascended to the throne.
