Ernest Shackleton

On February 15, 1874, polar explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton was born. Shackleton was one of the principle figures during the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His expeditions to Antarctica pioneered routes into the continent’s interior. In 1909, Shackleton and his team made a southern march and established a record Farthest South latitude at 88° 23′ S, by far the closest convergence in exploration history at the time. For his achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII.
