Profile of the Day: Franklin D. Roosevelt

Franklin D. Roosevelt

Today we remember Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, who was born on this day in 1882. Regarded as one of the greatest U.S. presidents in history, Roosevelt successfully led the country through the Great Depression and World War II until his death in 1945.

Roosevelt was a member of the prominent Roosevelt family, one of the oldest and wealthiest families in New York. He was a great admirer of his distant cousin, Theodore Roosevelt, who had become the 26th President of the United States in 1901. In 1905, he married Theodore’s niece, Eleanor Roosevelt.

In 1933, Roosevelt was sworn in as the 32nd President of the United States. With the country in the midst of the Great Depression, Roosevelt spent his first 100 days enacting new legislation and reforms to bring relief to unemployment and the economic crisis. Roosevelt is the only president in U.S. history to serve more than two terms in office. He died on April 12, 1945, just 11 weeks into his fourth term in office.
