Profile of the Day: George III
On October 25, 1760, George III became the King of Great Britain and Ireland. His long reign was marked by a series of conflicts, including the American Revolutionary War in which Britain would lose its colonies in the Americas. He would become one of the longest living and reigning monarchs before his granddaughter Queen Victoria‘s reign. In the later part of his life, George III suffered from bouts of mental illness that earned him the nickname of the “mad king.”
