Vigeland was born Adolf Gustav Thorsen on April 11, 1869 in Mandal. Born to a family of craftsmen, Vigeland’s father was a cabinet maker and carpenter. He spent his youth learning wood carving and later moved to Oslo determined to become a professional sculptor.

Vigeland is perhaps best known for the Vigeland installation, a permanent sculpture installation in Frogner Park in Oslo, Norway. The park holds over 200 bronze and granite sculptures designed by Vigeland. Today the park is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Norway, with 1-2 million visitors a year.

Did you know Vigeland is also the designer of the Nobel Peace Prize medal?
