Profile of the Day: Henrik Ibsen

Do you have Norwegian ancestors? 196 years ago today, Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen was born in Skien, Norway. Referred to as “the father of prose drama,” Ibsen is often regarded as one of the greatest playwrights since Shakespeare.

Ibsen was born on March 20, 1828 to Knud Ibsen and Marichen Altenburg in the small Norwegian costal town of Skien. Although once a well-to-do merchant family, the family was faced with hardships when they were thrown into poverty when Ibsen was 8. By 15, Ibsen was forced to leave school. He became an apprentice to a pharmacist and began writing plays. The family’s financial ruin would have a strong influence on Ibsen’s work. 

Known as the one of the founders of Modernism in theater, Ibsen’s major works include Peer Gynt, A Doll’s House, and Hedda Gabler. Many of his dramas were considered scandalous at the time for tacking some controversial topics. His work would influence many other great writers, including Oscar Wilde, Arthur Miller, and James Joyce. Today, his work continues to be performed around the world.
