Bergman was born Ernst Ingmar Bergman on July 14, 1918 to Erik Bergman and Karin Åkerblom. His father was a Lutheran minister and chaplain to the King of Sweden. He grew up in a strict household under the harsh rules of his father. Later in life, he drew upon his childhood experiences and emotions in his work, which often dealt with death, torment, pain, bleakness, love and insanity.
Over the course of his career, Bergman directed over 60 films and documentaries. Some of his most famous films include The Seventh Seal, Wild Strawberries, and Cries and Whispers.
