Do you remember reading The Catcher in the Rye? On this day five years ago, author J.D. Salinger died at the age of 91 in his home in Cornish, New Hampshire.

Jerome David Salinger was born on New Year’s Day, 1919 in New York City. He began writing at a young age, publishing several short stories before serving in World War II. In the spring of 1942, Salinger was drafted into the army. He saw combat in Europe and was one of the many soldiers who landed at Utah Beach on D-Day.

In 1951, Salinger’s famous novel, The Catcher in the Rye, was published and instantly became a best seller. However, Salinger quickly found he hated the attention. He became a recluse and lived the next 50 years in private.

Today Salinger is remembered as one of the most influential writers of the 20th century.
