Profile of the Day: James VI and I

Posted July 29, 2020 by Amanda | No Comment

On this day in 1567, James VI and I was crowned King of Scots at only 13 months old after his mother’s forced abdication.

James was born in Edinburgh Castle on June 19, 1566. He was the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, and her second husband, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. His mother’s unpopular reign was plagued by scandal. In February 1567, his father was murdered. A few short months later, his mother married James Hepburn, 4th Earl of Bothwell, who was widely suspected of killing her husband. By July, Mary was forced to abdicate her throne in favor of her infant son and he was crowned James VI of Scotland.

In 1603, James succeeded Elizabeth I and ruled as James I, King of Great Britain and Ireland. He would rule both kingdoms until his death on March 27, 1625 at the age of 58. He was succeeded by his son, Charles I.
