Joseph-Michel Montgolfier

On August 26, 1740, Joseph-Michel Montgolfier was born in Annonay, France. Joseph-Michel was the inventor of the hot air balloon, along with his brother, Jacques-Étienne. In June 1783, the brothers successfully demonstrated publicly the first manned ascent, carrying Étienne to the sky. In recognition of their achievement, their father Pierre was elevated to the nobility and the hereditary appellation of de Montgolfier by King Louis XVI of France.
