King James VI of Scotland and I of England

On July 29, 1567, James VI was crowned King of Scotland at the age of 13 months. In 1603, he succeeded Elizabeth I as King of England and Ireland, reigning as James I.

His mother Mary, Queen of Scots’s reign was marred by scandal. Her unpopularity intensified after the death of James’s father, Henry Stuart, Lord Darnley. Only months after Lord Darnley was found murdered, Mary married James Hepburn, 4th Early of Bothwell, who was widely suspected of committing the act. The scandalous union led the Scottish nobility to rise against Mary, imprison her in Loch Leven Castle and compel her to abdicate throne in favor of her young son.
