When he was born on September 5, 1638 in the Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, Louis’s parents had already been married for 23 years. His mother had experienced 4 stillbirths throughout the marriage, and so, when Louis was born, his birth was seen as a miracle and gift from God.

He inherited the crown at the age of 4 following the death of his father, Louis XIII. During his reign, Louis XIV consolidated power and transformed the monarchy. He ushered in a golden age of art and literature and made France the leading power of Europe.

At the time of his death, Louis XIV had ruled for 72 years and 110 days, the longest recorded rule of any monarchy in Europe.
