She was born Lucretia Coffin and was the second of five children born to Anna Folger and Thomas Coffin. Through her mother, Mott had many ancestral ties to several notable early Americans, including Benjamin Franklin, who was her first cousin four times removed. His grandparents, Peter Folger and Mary Morrill, were Mott’s fourth great grandparents.
A pioneer of women’s rights, Mott and fellow abolitionist Elizabeth Cady Stanton organized the Seneca Falls Convention in 1848. The gathering was the first women’s rights convention of its kind to be held in the United States.
Following the Civil War, Mott continued her work as an advocate for universal suffrage until her death in 1880.
