Lucy Maud Montgomery was born on November 30, 1874 in Clifton, Prince Edward Island, a small province on the east coast of Canada. After her mother died of tuberculosis when Montgomery was just 21 months old, her father sent her to live with her maternal grandparents.
A prolific writer, she had over 100 stories published between 1897 to 1907. In 1908, she published Anne of Green Gables, the first novel in her highly successful series centered around an orphaned girl named Anne. The story was an instant hit and earned Montgomery international fame. Since its publication, it has sold over 50 million copies worldwide and has been translated into about 20 languages.
