Luís Vaz de Camões

Today we highlight Luís Vaz de Camões, who is considered one of Portugal’s greatest poets in history. His mastery of verse has been compared to that of Shakespeare, Homer and Dante. Camões was born circa 1524 in Lisbon and died June 10, 1580. He is perhaps best remembered for his epic masterpiece, The Lusiads. It’s influence in Portuguese is so profound that it is called the “language of Camões.”
