Nelson Mandela

Today we remember inspirational figure Nelson Mandela on what would have been his 98th birthday.

Nelson Mandela was born on July 18, 1918 in the village of Mvezo in Umtata, South Africa. He was given the name Rolihlahla, a Xhosa term meaning “troublemaker.”

In his 20s, Mandela became actively involved in the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa. He spent 27 years of his life in prison after he was convicted of conspiracy to overthrow the state. After his release in 1990, Mandela helped lead his country to a peaceful end to decades of apartheid. He was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his role to peacefully end the apartheid regime and help lay the foundations for a new democratic South Africa. Soon after, Mandela became the first black president of South Africa.

Today, July 18 is known as Mandela Day, an international holiday in remembrance of the inspirational leader. In honor of his memory, inviduals are asked to devote their time to give back to their community.
