Nicolaus Copernicus

On May 24, 1543, astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus died at the age of 70. The Renaissance astronomer proposed the idea of a heliocentric solar system. He believed that the planets rotated around the sun, and that Earth, besides orbiting the sun annually, turned daily on its own axis. Copernicus’s theory significantly impacted scientific thinking of the time, and laid the beginnings of the scientific revolution.
