Profile of the Day: Patrick Stewart
Happy birthday, Patrick Stewart! Today the actor turns 77.
The Shakespearean trained actor was born on July 13, 1940 in Mirfield, England. He had a difficult childhood and grew up in a poor, abusive household. His father, Alfred Stewart, was a regimental sergeant major in the British Army and suffered from what was then known as combat fatigue, which is closely related to post-traumatic stress disorder. Stewart found solace in acting and participated in plays throughout his years in school.
Although he had garnered critical acclaim as a stage actor, Stewart didn’t become a household name until landing the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation. A spin-off of the original Star Trek series, the show was a huge hit during its 7-season run and produced 4 theatrical films.
Today he continues to juggle work on television, film and the stage, including recently reprising the role of Professor Charles Xavier in the X-Men spin-off, Logan.
