President Kennedy address the people of Berlin

Today marks the 50th anniversary of President John F. Kennedy‘s historic “Ich bin ein Berliner” speech. On this day in 1963, shortly after the Soviet-controlled East Germany erected the Berlin Wall, President Kennedy made a historic visit to the city to expressed his solidarity with the citizens of West Germany. In what proved to be a significant moment of the Cold War, his speech brought the people of the divided city hope and emphasized the United States’ support for the democratic West Germany. He ended his speech with the famous line:

“All free men, wherever they may live, are citizens of Berlin and therefore, as a free man, I take pride in the words ‘Ich bin ein Berliner’ (I am a Berliner).”
