The ninth child born to Harmen Gerritszoon van Rijn and Neeltgen Willemsdochter van Zuytbrouck, Rembrandt was put through school in preparation for a career in the government or ministry. However, by the age of 15, he abandoned his studies to pursue his art.

Considered one of the greatest and most important Dutch painters in history, Rembrandt’s work dominated what historians today refer to as the Dutch Golden Age. He produced hundreds of paintings, etchings and drawings, many of which were self portraits. Of his art, Rembrandt once said he hoped to achieve “the greatest and most natural movement.”
