Happy St. Patrick’s Day! On this day in 461, Saint Patrick, a Christian missionary, bishop, and apostle of Ireland, died in Downpatrick, Ireland.

It’s believed he was born in Britain, probably Scotland, around 387. At the age of 16, he was kidnapped by pirates and taken to Ireland where he was enslaved. He was held captive for six years before escaping and returning home. During his time in captivity, Patrick became deeply devoted to Christianity. After becoming a bishop, he returned to Ireland as a missionary to spread the teachings of Christianity to the Irish people and build churches throughout the country.

Many legends have been associated with the life of Saint Patrick, including the story of how he banished all the snakes from Ireland. The anniversary of his death is observed by the Catholic Church as an official feast day in memory of the Patron Saint of Ireland. Today people around the world also embrace St. Patrick’s Day in celebration of Irish culture and heritage.
