Profile of the Day: Samuel Adams

Adams was one of twelve children born to Samuel Adams, Sr. and Mary Fifield. The Adams were an affluent and prosperous Puritan family. His father was a prominent local merchant and church deacon who became a leading figure in Boston politics.
A strong opponent of British taxation, Adams emerged as one of the most prominent leaders of the Sons of Liberty in Boston. He played a vital role in organizing the Boston Tea Party in protest of the British Parliament’s passing of the Tea Act. In 1776, he signed the Declaration of Independence along with his second cousin and future President of the United States, John Adams.
Adams died on October 2, 1803 at the age of 81.
