Theodore Roosevelt, Jr.

Seventy years ago, thousands of Allied soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy in an offensive that would help lead to the defeat of the Third Reich and the end of World War II in Europe. One brave soldier present that day was Theodore Roosevelt, Jr., the eldest son of President Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt was the only general on D-Day to land by sea with the first wave of troops with the aid of a cane and a pistol in hand. At 56, he was the oldest man in the invasion. He was also the only man to serve with his son on D-Day at Normandy. His son, Captain Quentin Roosevelt II was among the first wave of soldiers to land at Omaha beach while his father commanded Utah beach.

Sadly, about a month after landing on the beach, Roosevelt died suddenly of a heart attack. In 1944, Roosevelt was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor “for gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty on 6 June 1944, in France.”
