He was born Hiram Ulysses Grant in Point Pleasant, Ohio to Jesse Root Grant, a tanner, and Hannah Simpson. Grant had deep roots in early America. His fifth great grandparents, Matthew and Priscilla Grant arrived at the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1630. His great grandfather, Noah Grant, served in the French and Indian War, where it was believed he died during a scouting mission. His grandfather, Noah Grant III, served in the American Revolutionary War and fought at Bunker Hill.

As the commanding general during the American Civil War, Grant led the Union Army to victory. In 1868, he was elected the 18th President of the United States. At 46 years old, Grant was the youngest president in history up to that time. He would serve two terms as president.

Grant died on July 23, 1885 at the age of 63.
