Guthrie was named after Woodrow Wilson, who was then the Democratic candidate for President. He faced family tragedies early in his life, including the death of his sister in a fire. His mother, suffering from Huntington’s disease, was also later institutionalized. By the age of 14, Guthrie was left to fend for himself.

During the Dust Bowl, Guthrie joined the thousands of Okies migrating West in search of work. This time would have a significant influence on his music and in 1940, he recorded the album Dust Bowl Ballads based on his experiences.

A prolific songwriter, Guthrie penned over 1,000 songs. He is perhaps best remembered for the popular folk song, “This Land Is Your Land.”
