Remembering September 11th

On September 11, 2001, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. In memory of the lives lost on that fateful day, Geni users have created the September 11 Memorial project. The project is dedicated to preserving the stories and memories of all 9/11 victims and those who risked their lives to save them. Was your family touched by the tragedy? Here’s an excerpt from the project’s description:

The purpose of this project is to pay tribute to the people in our family trees that paid the ultimate price for freedom on September 11, 2001. If you have someone in your tree that lost their lives in the attacks, please take a moment to add them to this memorial project.

Battalion Chief Orio Joseph Palmer

Orio Joseph Palmer

Battalion Chief of the New York City Fire Department Orio Joseph Palmer died while leading a rescue team to the 78th floor of the South Tower, where the plane struck the building. Recordings released in 2005 revealed that Palmer and his team were able to reach the 78th floor before the building collapsed. It was noted that Palmer exhibited a calm and professionalism right up to the time the tower fell.

Berry Berenson

Berry Berenson

American photographer Berry Berenson was a passenger on American Airlines Flight 11when it crashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center. She was the wife of actor Anthony Perkins and the granddaughter of Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli. Berenson was returning home to California after a holiday on Cape Cod. She died one day before the anniversary of Perkins’ death.
