Rosh Hashanah: Wishing You a Sweet New Year

Today at sundown, the Jewish community will begin their celebration of Rosh Hashanah, the start of the Jewish New Year. Considered one of the holiest of Jewish holidays, it is traditionally celebrated over the course of two days and is best characterized as a holiday of reflection, introspection and renewal. Much time during the holiday is spent in prayer, with people asking God for forgiveness, giving penance and praying for a healthy new year.

Like most holidays, families come together on Rosh Hashanah to share in large meals. Apples and honey are signature foods of the holiday and symbolize the hope for a sweet new year. One of the most significant symbols of the holiday is the Shofar, a ram’s horn. When the Shofar is blown, the sound created acts as a wake up call, reminding people the importance of reflection and repentance during this time.
