The 1940 U.S. Census is Now Available!

Today, the 1940 U.S. census is finally available to the public! The U.S. National Archives has released the 1940 census images online for free. These records contain information for over 132 million U.S. citizens and hold a plethora of genealogical treasures. Are you ready to find your relatives in the 1940 census?

Here are steps to get started:

• Visit the National Archives’ official website for the 1940 U.S. Census
• Search census maps and descriptions to determine the right enumeration district.
• The images are organized by enumeration district. Browse the census images to look for your ancestor.
• Once you locate the right image you can print, download and save the image to your computer

Remember, the 1940 census is not yet indexed by name. You will need to have some idea of where your ancestor was living at the time to search the images. A large group of volunteers have already started helping to get the name-index ready. Have fun browsing through the images and uncovering new information about your ancestors. You may even discover new relatives to add to your family tree.
