Esther Rowe Irish It looks like several of these profiles were already merged, but the merger didn't resolve conflicting data. Examples of what Sharon is talking about when she talks about power mergers who don't clean up the tree or the profiles after their careless and thoughtless merges.

Sometimes what is going on is that one of us is in the process of doing a LOT of merging and cleaning up, and not every data conflict gets cleaned up immediately.

I, for instance, have several windows going at the moment, and am switching back and forth between merging, unmerging, and resolving data conflicts.

The gist of all this is -- please DON'T post the data cleanups!

What we need is the unsourced medieval profiles.

Because every time they get merged in carelessly, or merged in by someone who isn't checking to see what problems got caused by the merge, they cause, well, obviously, problems.

The data conflicts are one of those problems, but we don't need to get pointed to them.

Here's my trick -- by which I mean, this is how I do it --

I have a list of Important Medieval Personages, and every week I go through and click on "view nearby merge issues," which is available up at the top right hand corner of profiles -- click on "Actions," and it's on the pull down tab. And then I clean things up. This sometimes takes weeks.

For a look at how big the mess is that's created by merge issues that aren't resolved, try this --

Click on this profile, and then go to Actions, up in the right hand corner, and click on "view nearby merge issues."

Private User I took a look at the merge issues you pointed us too, and I see very clearly how huge the problem is. From just that one merge there are 50 PAGES of merge issues - not 50 problems but 50 pages! That very succinctly shows why it's so important to NOT merge unsourced profiles.

Why does Geni not put some safeguards in place? They're desperately needed!

Private User -- yep! Pages and pages. He is now on my list.

But look again. That isn't from one merge. That is a collection of years of fallout from merges, unresolved. The tree conflicts go back to 2014. The data conflicts g back to 2011.

There has been a lot of discussion about what, if anything, to do. The medieval and ancient branches of the tree are highly problematic, because they look easier to work in than they are. If a web tree gives you a line back to Charlemagne, why not copy it in?

And of course the answer is not just because the people in between us and Charlemagne are already in the tree, but because the web tree isn't a trustworthy source. And it is hard for people who,aren't pretty well versed in the middle ages to tell what are reliable sources and what aren't for the time.

But the problem of course is that Geni is collaborative. We are all working together on the tree. So we don't want to unnecessarily restrict users.

So people are thinking about it. Make relationships lockable? Restrict access to the earlier branches of the tree? Useful aspects and problematic aspects to both solutions.

And also whatever gets decided on has to get coded.

There is no easy nor quick solution.

It's really quite simple, Judy. Go to Tree view. Select a profile you want to merge, choose "Move", and then drag it on top of the profile you want to merge it with. Select "Same person".

Sometimes you will be able to complete the merge routine by yourself; sometimes you will need the assistance of a Pro or a Curator.
