@Erica Howton...thanks for reposting the link I added yesterday, it didn't highlight correctly. (Sorry, Debra!)
Following up on your cautionary note, I've located several sites that reference discussions on the Carrington Smith/Smythe issue, and especially note the Geni discussion which you started...
https://www.geni.com/discussions/163744
I'm guessing this is what you were referring to.......
Thank you for the alert on this issue.
there is no easy way to explain the obvious:
USER 2008 Don Mario Gregorio
[this https://it.geneanet.org/profil/mariothegreat ? ] to which myriads of medieval conflicts / lightness have been resolved here on GENI, in which he has never participated with even a word in any discussion to resolve his data uploaded and abandoned.. it can be assumed that it has a 20k + profiles GEDCOM
from these 2 DUP sisters now we can deduce that he uploaded it 2 more times:
-[October 2019] Violante Spadafora
-[June 2021] Violante Spadafora
He has again new duplication conflicts obviously scattered everywhere going up the Italian Middle Ages, even in his family, starting immediately above the grandparents & even in first degree relatives..
now it is obvious that either he has never been able to understand how the Big Shared World Tree of GENI works.. (or he does it on purpose!?)
If he doesn't even respond to this last serious very important last appeal public.. can you please STOP him from doing other uploads & merges!?

Margaret Mure
(Maybe we don't need to worry about this one? I see that "These profiles cannot be merged because one of them is in a tree that has been marked isolated.")
has two fathers -
think it was this last merge that may have brought the extra John in.... ?

Please assist,
I noticed when I was about to upload source documentation.
Thank you
Were you able to find out what sort of progress Geni is making regarding the Gedcom downloads done by Mario? I see some progress, but very slowly. At it's peak I had 676 profiles that I manage reporting tree matches and 851 that I follow. Those numbers, are slowly decreasing and now stand at 485 and 565 respectively.
However, everyday Geni finds additional tree matches. Today a bunch of tree matches were found on profiles loaded on May 21st.
Does Geni realize that there there were likely more than just one Gedcom download at issue?
Any information would be appreciated.
Bernard
Bernard Joseph Albanese & Livio Scremin - updated Geni with the additional info from discussion. My thanks for keeping the eye on.
Suzan Martin See https://www.geni.com/discussions/232711?msg=1480126 where I’m logging Austin / Austen confusions.
situation under control:
-go to profile -->María Jaimez
-edit.
-Relations TAB
-wait a few seconds for all the charges, and down below you will find a small square indicating those of the parents. Select, it.
-Press remove,
-OK / save. get out, done
We've had massive, bizarre GEDCOM attacks recently, spewing disinformation all over the tree from way back before they *should* have been allowed to upload down to the present. Apparently the "safeguards" against this happening all failed simultaneously, and as a result there is a hideous cleanup job that will take months - or years.
Private User - I fully agree with you on the recent GEDCOM uploads.
One problem that I have noticed about Geni is how strict it is about spelling differences (Allen vs Allyn, for example). Because of this, many duplicates are allowed to occur.
Another issue I have with GEDCOM uploads is they are allowed to go until about 1600. It would be easier on all of us if they were stopped at about 1750. Any remaining profiles would then need to be manually loaded. I now find myself needing to go through my maternal tree and searching for duplicates from the Recinos upload and one other.
Dakotah Lynn Marie Woller modify the data of unsourced María Jaimez
to VIP María de Aragón, señora consorte de los Cameros
after that in the info about it is precisely specified not to confuse them, it is very little PRO.
..anyway Aragon MP VIP tree situation resolved,
Visual cues and notes left on the other side.
Work with it by documenting, not randomly cloning the first unknown unfounded suggestion online. Thanks bye.
Private User and Emily Kent Marget I will add to the chorus. The gedcoms are killing us. The "safeguards" are not working and probably as noted due to spelling differences, etc.
Furthermore, I think there is an ethical difference. Many of us try to find sources and real "meat" to put on profiles. Someone who just uploads a gedcom automatically becomes a manager with a merge and they have done what? Most of the time, they have left us with useless "data" info that is unreadable and wrong linkages to parents and siblings as a by-product of their suffering from "Ancestryitis." Bad information that someone has to clean up.
Couple of years ago, a "cousin" dumped over 10,000 profiles on Geni and didn't lift a finger to merge. She told me "It does it automatically." When I explained it did not, silence and she is inactive today. Another one more recently dumped 2,500, which doesn't sound nearly so bad until you merge and have to continue merging into places you don't want to go. She is gone when I tried to find out the source for a couple of her additions.
This needs to stop or the damage is going to be irreparable. How many times do we have to say it?
I very rarely go back beyond 1700 (still trying to document all of my relatives to Colonial times), but I feel your pain concerning the GEDCOM profiles! After spending a lot more time on here during the last year, I feel like world trees probably just aren't compatible with GEDCOM uploads anymore, especially the longer Geni is around.
It's extremely rare that I cannot go back a few generations and connect a recently deceased person to the tree, or a newly discovered spouse to her family. There really doesn't seem to be any reason to start with anything other than yourself and your family, especially since most of the GEDCOM profiles I run into are basically blank profiles with a lot of text that is mostly unverifiable.
One thing I wish Geni would do that both FamilySearch and WikiTree do is try to match a new profile to existing people as you are entering them. I feel like that would lessen the duplicate profiles and at least make people think before hitting the save button.
Lastly, if I make a mistake, it's usually something that can be easily rectified with an unmerge or two. The thought of what 2,500 or 10,000 unmerged (and possibly horribly incorrect) profiles can to do an area of the tree like midieval times kind of horrifies me! I would like to be able to assume that if I connect "Aunt Bessie" to the tree that it is accurate beyond her.
Thank you for all of the work the people in this discussion do in the older and foreign language areas of the tree!
