I know an Inupiaq Eskimo with a family name of Kulik. His father was white.

Have you discovered the Surnames page yet? If you search for Čulić, there are 1,172 profiles currently on Geni with that surname: https://www.geni.com/surnames/Čulić

You can also search for variations at https://www.geni.com/surnames

Hello again to all,

I apologize if I have not given enough prior information, thank you in advance for your understanding.

Dear Mr. @Byron - thanks for this information, surname Čulić (Culic) is possible during the emigration to transform the surname Kulik (Kulick, Culick, ...) but about how exactly I have no information and links when converted.

Except searching Church registers from Family Search Croatia, http://www.libertyellisfoundation.org/passenger-result
Archive Ellis and others like here http://boards.ancestry.co.uk/surnames.culic/mb.ashx but I did not get any answers, further here also has the same last name Culic http: //search.ancestry. co.uk/cgi-bin/sse.dll?gl=allgs&gss=sfs28_ms_r_f-2_s&new=1&rank=1&gsln=Culic&gsln_x=0&MSAV=1&cp=0&catbucket=rstp&uidh=qvc (which currently do not have and do not find the links.),

also on page Myheritage: https://www.myheritage.com.hr/research?action=query&formId=mast... where I have not registered, but I cooperate with @Jadra , and easily connects to Geni if there have a Smart matching.

and other sources that can be seen on the profile of the project Genealogy of family Culic https://www.geni.com/projects/Obitelj-Culic/23918 Culic (which I occasionally update)

Surname Culic (Čulić) of history to date has been written in many different forms: Ciulich, Culich, Ciulich, Ciulic, Culic, Čulić .... possible; Kulik, Zulik ... and in other versions in different languages.

Surnames: Culic(ć), (Ć)uli(ć), (Č)ulo or similar is not the same surname Čulić (Culic)

Dear Mrs. @Ashley - yes, thank you but I know about that, I've written up and you can see more details on my profile or project of Genealogy family Culic.

Hi Ozren,

It may be impossible to trace Petar Toma Čulić-Dragun for a number of reasons;

1) Africa is a huge continent - while it is possible that he went to South Africa, there is nothing to confirm that, and he may have gone to Egypt, perhaps to work on the Suez Canal or some associated project, or to some other country in Northern Africa.
2) The Church book may be wrong, I have one cousin who was recorded to have emigrated to Chile, when in fact he went in the other direction, to Asia.
3) His records may have a different name, one example, emigrants from Brač, with the surname Sinovčić, had to change their surname to Sinovich, because the local Afrikaners and English were unable to pronounce the original surname.

I have looked through the reference material that I have on Croatian settlers in Southern Africa, but was unable to find any reference to the Čulić-Dragun surname.

There was only one Čulić that I know of, who lived in Johannesburg - the mother of Pero Basich, who lives in Cape Town.
Marija Karmela Bašić (Čulić Viskota)

regards
Ivo

The list of early arrivals from Croatia (as per Mursalo's book) can be found here
https://media.geni.com/p13/c3/8f/79/7e/5344484274e7629d/early_croat...

regarding point 1 in my earlier reply,
"Africa" has a surface area some 533 times the size of that of Croatia, so unless you can define a specific country and town/city, it will be impossible to determine exactly where in Africa he went.
see http://www.iflscience.com/environment/africas-size-perspective/

I've not found any records for any other Culic here in RSA/JAR, other than the Marija Culic Viskota, who I referred to earlier.

Ivo

Private in description of his profile in birth record only was added information about date of his death and place Africa , not specific country/county region or town/city of Africa, nothing else write there. I know about Marija Karmela Basich mother of Pero Basich. How you also told maybe a different written name but i don't know where i can start to research for record of his death. So maybe he go to work on Suez on the North or on the South part of Africa, but date of his death is June 1914. In that month and year are available and existed a records of deaths?

Bog Ozren,

I have looked in all the books that I have which list the known Croatian settlers in southern Africa (South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, and other neighboring countries) and found nothing, I looked again a couple of days ago, when I was researching Croats in Central Africa, still found nothing
I also looked at the church listings (Croatian church parish here in Jo'burg) - sometimes people ask for Mass for their parents/grandparents, there is also a Memorial list which I had updated a couple of years ago
There is no Culic listed in the addresses that the Croatian parish keeps, nor in the email address list from the Croatian embassy
The book published by the Croatian Institute for Migration and Ethnic Studies
- Juzna Afrika i Hrvati by Ante Lausic and Jozo Anic, also has a incomplete list of Croatians living in South Africa, but also showed no Culic.

Regarding your question about a registry of deaths, there is one website available online, it is not an official government website, but a private one which you have to subscribe to in order to see detailed results. There is no entry for Culic on it. It only has entries for people from South Africa.

If Petar Tomo Culic went to another African country, any official records about him may no longer exist, as a last resort you can try looking for any descendants via Facebook or the online telephone directories or business listings.

The Marija Culic who I'd mentioned, lived in Johannesburg (I remember going to her funeral) and one (or more) of her grandsons lives in Zagreb, possibly that family may have some knowledge of any other Culic's who may have been in South Africa, which is why I mentioned Petar Basic (son of Marija Culic), who lives in Cape Town, as you can try contacting his sons to see if there is any more info.
