  • From pages 250-251 of the History of the Macleods, which you will find the full text as a PDF in the media section. It indicates Donald Macleod of Bernera was generally spoken as "The Old Trojan" and he was married three times. Donald Macleod of Bernera was generally spoken as "The Old Trojan" and he was married three times as follows: Wife #1: Anne. Page 250 reads, "Donald married, first, when only 18 years of age, Anne, daughter of Roderick Macleod, XVII. of Macleod, by his wife Isabel, daughter of Kenneth, third Earl of Seaforth, by his wife, also Isabel, sister of George, first Earl of Cromarty." Wife #2: Margaret Macdonald. Page 253 reads" "He married, secondly, Margaret Macdonald, described as "a daughter of John Macdonald Gorm Macdonald of Sleat." They lived together for nineteen years, without issue." Wife #3: Margaret, daughter of Rev. Donald Macloed, III, Of Greshornish. Page 253 reads: "Donald Macleod of Bernera married, thirdly, in the 75th year of his age, Margaret, daughter of the Rev. Donald Macleod, III. of Greshornish, and minister of Duirinish. She was then only sixteen years of age. By this marriage Donald had issue, in his old age—three sons and six daughters.

Can someone PLEASE remove the photo id on this profile....

Anna Sophia Hartung

Done.

Diana Collins never, from what I glean of the culture.

It was a feudal society, the landowner and his tenant farmers. From what I understand a minister would visit the island now and again.

What I’m trying to say is that there was no social mobility until the late 19th century and emigration. You will not find educated professionals in this tree. No ministers, army officers, land holders, university goers, not even craftsmen from what I can see; not even the blacksmiths and carpenters who provided essential community services in the pioneer communities we study in America. Not even husbandmen & shepherds. Just handbuilt cottages

... not even livestock (maybe chickens?) Small farms for vegetables, fish from the sea. No industry. This was a primitive existence at the edge of the world and likely unchanged for centuries.

What Erica describes is typical of remote Celtic isles. The same thing happens even today on many Gaelic-speaking islands, where you're lucky to have one weekly church service and where children get sent to the mainland for schooling. There are islands on Ireland's Atlantic coast, for example, that only got electricity this century. The Outer Hebrides are in a similar situation.

I don't think people are quite appreciating the remoteness of the Outer Hebrides. There's a reason the region is considered culturally separate from Scotland. The norms you're expecting from Scottish or British culture just don't exist.

This is also why the idea of nobles running around makes no sense. This was and is a place of poverty, where the only money belonged to absentee landlords.

If you read the biography "Trump Revealed," one of the opening chapters is about him visiting Tong. He realizes the depth of his family's poverty while there and understands why his mother and so many others left. He leaves after only an hour or so because there's nothing to see or do. Just tiny, dark cottages and harsh winds.

Trump's mother, btw, was a Sabbatarian and a member of the Free Church of Scotland. There is a local church that serves Tong, but the clergy rotate between several small villages throughout the week (in typical Celtic isle fashion), and it looks from their bulletin that it's common for folks from the mainland to fly in to give sermons.

I debated e-mailing the parish office to ask about records, but 1) if they existed, they'd already be available and 2) there's a BBC article at https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35756032 that makes it clear that islanders do not want inquiries about Trump ancestry. Based on my own family background, with my mother being from a similarly remote island, I can completely understand that. So I will be respecting their wishes and leaving them alone.

Unknown Profile I’m sorry the Geni tree correction is distressing to you.

But there was a mistake on Geni in President Trump’s tree. Two different Donald MacLeods had been mixed up with each other. We corrected that error in 2017 with the publication of his preliminary “official” pedigree, which you may view here:

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000097609582064&

Unfortunately, the error came back into Geni for a while, giving people a false connection temporarily. This may well be what you thought you saw.

Through his daughter Tiffany we do in fact have extensive connections, as her mother’s tree goes back to early Colonial America. For example, Geni says:

Tiffany Trump is your 14th cousin four times removed.

https://www.geni.com/path/Erica-Howton+is+related+to+Tiffany-Trump?...

And also: Tiffany Trump is your 6th great aunt's 6th great niece.

https://www.geni.com/path/Erica-Howton+is+related+to+Tiffany-Trump?...

Unknown Profile, it has been explained what happened.

The unproven line got back into the Tree unnoticed.

It then got fixed.

If you had taken your screenshots earlier, the connection would not have been there.

This is not about politics. This is about genealogical standards. The false connection does not meet the standards.

There was a glitch. It gave you a closer connection than you had previously. It has now been corrected. Things are back as they were.

I found a site talking mentioning Hebridean connections.

https://www.hebrideanconnections.com/locations/2702

Also, found these two sites mentioning surnames....

http://ecclegen.com/ministers-mac2/

http://imwe.co.uk/fh6_files/fam1408.html

Donald MACLEOD (1839-1878) is mentioned in both (not saying connected to discussion's MacLeods.)

And THANK YOU for removing that photo!

If anyone finds or creates the profiles mentioned on those sites, please post them on here so I can follow.

Big difference in the dates...don't you think...

Please focus on genealogy, valid corrections were made. Geni curators have already explained multiple times what occurred, see:
