They are easily mixed up. This discussion focuses on documenting and correcting them. Resources welcome.

Identified lines:

  • George of Andover
  • George of Rowley
  • George of Connecticut
  • Walter of Portsmouth

Fictitious profiles from the Restinos upload -

Resource for the Andover families - https://mhl.org/sites/default/files/files/Abbott/Abbott%20Family.pdf It is a bit cumbersome because it is a PDF but it does a decent job. There are more like it from the Andover library for other families in Andover.

Of course, the Andover VR is a good place to start.

8/1/2021 at 1:19 PM

One more fictitious profile - Mary Abbott although she may belong to the Connecticut family.

8/1/2021 at 4:53 PM

Phebe Russel is not a child of Deacon John Abbott, Jr. and his wife, Elizabeth. Andover VR has them with 5 children - 4 boys and Elizabeth.

8/1/2021 at 5:16 PM

Baby Boy Abbott is also not supported by Andover VR as a child of Deacon John Abbott, Jr. He was added by the same manager as Phebe.

I would add that there is a recently published compilation of the descendants of George Abbott and Hannah Chandler of Andover. I am willing to make available the database created in connection with the preparation of this work, if anyone is interested. Send me a message.

Abbott, Patricia A. 2019. The Descendants of George Abbott of Andover and Hannah Chandler Through Six Generations: Including Male and Female Lines of Descent from Generation One to Generation Six. Emerald Isle, NC: Patricia A. Abbott. ISBN:13: 978-0-578-51595-3.

Erica Howton - I found the rest of Jeremiah's VR info as well as his FAG and posted to him.

Miriam Abbott has siblings that are ALL private! All born before the Revolution.

Please reverse https://www.geni.com/merge/view?revision_id=79957373660. The birth years do not make sense. Supported by https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Blanchard-5538 with sources.

Emily Kent Marget - I’m up to date on the fixes.

Can we place Caleb Blanchard with his correct parents?

Two profiles that do not belong to Brevitor Breveter Gray and his wife, Dorothy - Catherine Gray and her brother, Austice Gray

I found no reference to Austice in Andover VR. Catherine was added a sister to Austice. She has a death place of North Carolina and a birth place of Virginia. Neither Brevitor nor Dorothy left Essex County, Massachusetts.

8/10/2021 at 10:25 PM

John Abbott, Jr has two wives and two sons with very similar info. There appears to have been a GEDCOM in 2019 that caused these. (The birth and death locations are a giveaway.)

Jonathan A Abbott is part of an abandoned tree. The manager has not been active since December 2019.

Phebe Abbott is claimed by FS to have married Jonathan Porter With Medford VR showing births from 1791 to 1803, I think they are incorrect.

The various suggested MH matches have her with a William Abbott. This not supported by Andover VR.

Andover VR has several other Phebe Abbotts that are more likely candidates to have married Jonathan Porter:
* Phebe, d. Nehemiah, jr., bp. Apr. 3, 1763.
* Phebe, d. [Lt. CR2] Henry, jr. and Phebe, Jan. 25, 1766.
* Phebe, d. Jonathan, 3d and Mary, Feb. 26, 1766.
* Phebe, d. Benjamin and Joanna, bp. June 28, 1766.
* Phebe, d. Isaac, jr. [3d. CR2] and Phebe, May 27, 1767. died Nov. 8, 1772. [in her 6th y. GR2]
* Phebe, d. John [jr. CR2] and Abigail, Nov. 18, 1768.
* Phebe, d. Hannah, bp. Nov. 29, 1772.

Perley has Phebe 1763 married to John Lovejoy Abbot. Her parents are Nehemiah Abbott & Hannah Ballard.

Phebe, d. of Benjamin is Phebe Martin I don't see a source for why she was married to Solomon Martin other than Andover VR.

WikiTree has Phebe 1768 with Edward Carlton. It cites 2 different books about the Abbotts.

Emily Kent Marget and Erica Howton, I "inherited" some Abbott profiles and would try to contribute, but can't right now. Please do what is needed. Thanks.

Isaac Abbott is attached the incorrect family.

He is Isaac Abbot who is attached to the proper parents.

This is supported by the Mass. Vital Records database project (https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Andover/aBirthsA.shtml "(ABBOT (Abbet, Abbett, Abbott, Abbut, Abbutt, Abett)) Isaac, s. Isaac, jr. and Phebe, Dec. 9, 1768.")

We know from Andover VR that Capt. Thomas (2) Abbott & Sarah Abbott had a daughter, Mary born July 23, 1686.

Who did she marry - James Kidder or John Kittredge?

https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Abbot-765 has the marriage to John Kittridge. It claims "An intention of marriage between John Kittridg of Billerica and 'Hannah' Abbot was published 3 January 1707/08 at Andover. The clerk has made an error, as shown by a deed dated 12 February 1722/23 in which John Kitteridge of Billerica, chirurgeon, quits claim to his brother in law Thomas Abbot of Andover, husbandman, all and every part of his right in the estate of Thomas Abbot of Andover, deceased, by virtue of his marrying with Mary Abbot, daughter of abovesaid Thomas Abbot." (Citing the Massachusetts Registry of Deeds on the FamilySearch website"

This leads me to believe that the Mary Abbott that married James Kidder is NOT the daughter of Thomas & Sarah.

Thus, Mary Kidder and her husband and children should be detached from Capt. Thomas (2) Abbott.

Then, Mary Kittredge should be attached to Capt. Thomas (2) Abbott.

2/22/2022 at 2:50 AM

Perhaps Mary Abbott is the Mary Abbott that married James Kidder, IV

Phebe Abbott born 31 Aug 1750 daughter of Joshua Abbott and Phebe Ingalls married John Everden. In his will dated 2 March 1772, Joshua Abbott of Amherst, NH orders that all his property (except his household furniture) be sold following his death.  One-third of the proceeds is to be set aside for his wife Phebe.  His wife is to also have her choice of one of his cows.  Th remainder of the proceeds are to be divided among his children:  oldest son Joshua and other sons Stephen and Peter, with the sons to have £4 more than any of the daughters; daughter Phebe the wife of John Everden; daughters Elizabeth and Sarah are to have equal portions; and the youngest son Joseph to be provided for by the executor from the estate proceeds until he arrives at an age to be bound out as an apprentice.  At the age of 21, Joseph will receive a cash payment for his portion.

Based on the testimony of Othman A. Abbott who was the second son Abiel Abbott and Sabrie Abbott (Young). Abiel Abbott was a descendant of George Abbott & Hannah Chandler through WIlliam Abbot their son. But Abiel Abbott was also a descendant of James and Mary Chilton of Plymouth, Massachusetts through Elizabeth Gray, their granddaughter who married William Abbot. (James Chilton was the 23rd signer of the Mayflower Compact.) This is information from "Recollections of a Pioneer Lawyer" By Othman A. Abbott published in February 1929 by the Nebraska State Historical Society. This information seems to contradict other information. Please help sort this out!.

We had also had a “contact manager” discussion and as a result, added these source notes to the profile Elizabeth Abbott

“Last name given variously as: Gray, Geery, Geary, Gary

“Note H4333

William Abbott, born in Andover Nov 18, 1657. He was a weaver, and lived in Andover. He had the Puritan faith. He married Elizabeth Geary of Roxbury June 19, 1682. She died Nov 26, 1712; and he died Oct 21, 1713. (Antiquarian -p36)”

I presume that’s from the Essex Antiquarian (Sidney Perley, editor).

The Geary (not Gray) spelling is also found on page 724 here:

https://archive.org/details/colonialrevoluti02jord/page/723/mode/1u...

William Abbot, son of George and Hannah (Chandler) Abbot, born in Andover, Massachusetts, November 18, 1657, spent his whole life there. He married, June 19, 1682, Elizabeth Geary, born July 10, i65i. daughter of Nathan- iel Geary, of Roxbury, Massachusetts, and his wife Ann Douglass, daughter of William Douglass, and granddaughter of Robert Douglass, first of Gloucester, who was a resident of Boston in 1640; …

Vital Records of Andover have:

https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Andover/aMarriagesA.shtml "(ABBOTT (Abbet, Abbett, Abbot)) William, and Elizabeth Geery, June 19, 1682."

https://ma-vitalrecords.org/MA/Essex/Andover/aDeathsA.shtml "(ABBOTT (Abbet, Abbett, Abbot)) William, sr., h. Elizabeth (Gary), s. George and Hannah (Chandler), Oct. 21, 1713."

Private User - do you have a link to your source with the Chilton ancestry claim?

3/17/2022 at 8:32 PM

This is the Elizabeth Gray who descends from James Chilton: Elizabeth Arnold

As you can see, similar dates but very different locations and family.

This Elizabeth Gray is in the book “Mayflower Families Through 5 Generations Vol. 15 p. 36.”

Erica Howton The source is for my information is based on a copy of the" Recollections of a Pioneer Lawyer" by O. A. Abbott which I just got a hardcopy of its softcover edition published in February 1929 by the Nebraska Historical Society.
