Hey, Guys.

I changed the year of birth to circa 1599, since this William Carter claimed to be 54 yoa in March 1653. I think that the year of birth should stay approximately 1599, unless a source proving an exact date on be found. Even though that would be unlikely :)

Reference: Stanard, W. G., preparer, "Abstracts of Virginia Land Patents" The Virginia Magazine of History and Biography, Vol. 5, No. 2 (Oct., 1897), pp. 211-214, Virginia Historical Society, JSTOR accessed September 10, 2014

For Geni purposes, it's probably even better to use 1599 without the "Circa" box checked.

Geni has a very specific meaning to the Circa flag on dates -- it means precisely +/- 5 years. You can see that in the resulting age estimate. In this instance, with the birth Circa set, the age shows as (51-60) based on death in Aug. 1655.

By unchecking it, the age estimate changes to (55-56) ... much closer to the "reference" age 53 as of March 1653.

A good Geni guideline could be: if the date is known +/- 1 year or so (e.g. most U.S. census date estimates) do NOT check the Circa box.

However, if the date is a multiple of 5 (e.g. xxx0 or xxx5), then -- unless you know there are other reasons, such as birth order of siblings -- DO check the Circa box, since that'll probably give a better age-range estimate.

If you know the 'actual' date range, then use the "Between" option to define the dates. The estimated age will adjust accordingly.
