Biography

Abigail (Burt) Stebbins was born circa 1623 in Haberton, Devon, England. Her parents were Henry Burt, of Springfield and Eulalia (Marche) Burt.

1. Abigail married Francis Ball, of Springfield on October 3, 1644 in Springfield, Hampden County, Massachusetts, United States. Together they had the following children: Jonathan Ball, of Springfield; Thomas Ball; Samuel Ball.
2. Abigail married Capt. Benjamin Munn on April 12, 1649 in Springfield, Hampden, Ma. Together they had the following children: Daniel Munn; Abigail (Munn) Stebbins; John Munn; Mary (Munn) Wheeler; Benjamin Munn; James (Mun) Munn; Nathaniel Munn; Sarah (Munn) Stoughton.
3. Abigail married Lieutenant Thomas Stebbins on December 14, 1676 in Massachusetts Bay Colony.

She died on February 3, 1692 in Springfield, Hampshire County (Present Hampden County), Province of Massachusetts.

BIOGRAPHY: Court Appearance; 11 Jan 1640/41; Springfield, Hampden Co., MA 17. Found guilty of two misdemeanors in promising to marry John Hobell after her father had refused permission and for attemping 'fornication'. Sentenced to be whipted by the Constable.

With her brother Jonathan, she was a witness in the witchcraft proceedings against Hugh/1 Parsons at Springfield, 1649-51. "In the ridiculous and senseless testimony in the case, the clear and unimpeachable testimony of Jonathan and his sister Abigail Munn, contrasts brightly with the statements of some of the other witnesses. They do not appear to be affected by the prevalent delusion, but confined themselves to facts." ( Burt, Life & Times of Henry Burt, 117-118.)

DEATH: Some references have death on Feb. 3, 1692. Famous Political US Leaders has death on June 2, 1707 but has burial in 1692. Bradley, Collette et al, Jacobus and Descendants of Rowland Stebbins have death on June 2, 1707.

"Know allmen that whereas there is a marriage intended to be this day sollomnised between the widdow Ball and Benjamin Mun of Hartford: That the said Widdow Ball in the presence and with the consent of the said Benjamin doth condition to pay fourteene pounds in such pay as shall be estemed worth fourteene pounds to be paid to the two sonns of the said widdow that is to say eight pounds to Jonathan Ball now about 4 yere ould and six pounds ot Samuell Ball now about the age of a yere to be paid to them when they shall accomplish the age of twenty yeres and in case either of them dye the other is to have all the said 14Ð: provided also that if the said Benjamin shall put out the said boyes to be apprentises to some trade then he shall lay our their said portions for thier accommodation and so shall be freed of the said payment at 20 yeares of age and the said Benjamin doth acknowledge himself to stand bound in the some of 20Ð for the true performance of the said conditions: and uppon this their agreement I do give them leave to proceed in mariage:

Abigail Burt led a very colorful life and she had two other husbands after Francis Ball of Springfield, Benjamin Munn in 1649 and Thomas Stebbins in 1676.
