Joseph Kitchel was born in Newark, Essex County, New Jersey, on 25 January 1712, but spent his youth and adult life in one place - Morris County, New Jersey. He lived on part of the Kitchel farm, which he inherited from his father, Abraham. Joseph's homesite was on sixty acres of land and was called for many generations, the Kitchel Homestead. The farm was located at Parsippany, New Jersey, and lay on the road to Hanover and east of the Whippany River.
In 1730 Joseph increased his acreage by purchasing about 40 acres adjacent to his property from John Budd. The last land purchase known to have been made by Joseph Kitchel was a 12-acre parcel bought from Edward Byram in 1764, a deed for meadow land situated between the Whippany and Perkak Rivers.
Like his forefathers, Joseph was a religious man. When the Reverand Jacob Green, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, and the church congregation met on June 51, 1734 to elect elders, Joseph was among the five elders chosen.

Volume: 113 1,2204::251199 Joseph Kitchell, Esq., died at age 69. His name appears on the eastern side of the granite monument which honors his celebrated son, Aaron, his widow, Rachel Bates Kitchell, and Aaron's wife, Phebe Farrand Kitchell.
The monument is a Victorian era replacement for the individual sandstone steles which originally memorialized these four members of the Kitchell family, and does not necessarily mark their graves. Joseph's and Rachel's remains are probably located beneath an addition to the church which was built after their deaths, and Rachel's original gravestone, which still survives, is located elsewhere in the cemetery.
