There is a large Lott family in Long Island, New York, thus perhaps contributing to a bit of the confusion between the two Adam Mott lines.

According to Robert Charles Anderson references in The Great Migration Begins in the will of Adam Mott I of Portsmouth dated 2 April 1661 he mentions "Sarah Mott my wife" who he first immigrated with in 1636. He married Sarah (maiden name unknown) Lott on 11 May 1635. She washis second wife. His first wife was Elizabeth Creed who he married on 28 Oct 1616 in Saffron Walden, Essex. Also according to Anderson, the Mott-142|Adam Mott, b. abt 1623 married Lott-68|Mary Lott (his stepsister who Austin says is listed as Mary Mott on the passenger list for the Defence) on October 1647. Adam Mott of Rhode Island was the third son from his father's first marriage to Elizabeth Creed. On 20 September 1652, he was deeded 12 acres of land in Portsmouth by his father, Mott-17|Adam Mott. Mott-142|Adam Mott was on a list of Freemen in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1655 and was a Deputy in Portsmouth in 1673. Mott-142|Adam Mott died testate, having written a will on 24 February 1711. There were two men named Adam Mott who emigrated from England around the same time. This profile represents the Adam Mott born about 1623, who was the son of Adam Mott born 1594 at Saffron, Walden, England. The family emigrated from Horseheath, Cambridge to New England on the ship Defence in 1635. They lived first in Roxbury, Massachusetts, then removed to Hingham in 1636, settling in Portsmouth, Rhode Island in 1638.[1][2] The Rhode Island Adam Mott married his stepsister Mary Lott. There is a large Lott family in Long Island, New York, thus perhaps contributing to a bit of the confusion between the two Adam Mott lines.
The other Adam Mott, born 1620/1, emigrated from Essex County, arrived in 1638 on the ship Bevis, and settled in New York.[3] He was the son of James Mott and Grace Thurgar.[4]
The two Adam Motts were first cousins, sons of brothers Adam Mott and James Mott.
Biography
Adam Mott immigrated to New England as a child during the Puritan Great Migration (1621-1640).
Adam Mott was born about 1623 in probably Saffron Walden, Essex, England. He was the son of Adam Mott born 1596 [1594],[5] the third son from his father's first marriage to Elizabeth Creel.[1]
In 1635, at age 12 (12 on 2 July 1635), Adam Mott emigrated from Horseheath, Cambridge with his father Adam Mott, a tailor, age 39, along with Sarah Mott, 31; John Mott, 14; Jonathan Mott, 9; Elizabeth Mott, 6; and Mary Mott, 4. They were passengers on the Defence,[6] and lived first in Roxbury, Massachusetts, then removed to Hingham in 1636, followed by Portsmouth in 1638, settling in Rhode Island.[1][2]
According to Austin, Anderson and Arnold, Adam Mott married in October 1647, Mary Lott,[1][2][7] his stepsister, who was recorded on the passenger list for the Defence.[1][6][2]
On 20 September 1652, Adam was deeded 12 acres of land in Portsmouth by his father and was a Deputy in Portsmouth in 1673.[1] In 1655, Adam Mott, Sr., and Adam Mott, Jr., were listed as Freemen of Portsmouth.[8]
