About Alexander Gregson Houston McMillan

Alexander married Lena on 2 December 1889 at the Clydesdale Mission Station at Umzimkulu. Alexander was a farmer and owned a number of farms in southern Natal and East Griqualand. On 7 July 1897 he purchased a portion of the farm Rietfontein (701.5448 morgen) in the Mount Currie district, East Griqualand. He called it Gordon. He bought the farm Clive (653 morgen 146 square roods) also in the Mount Currie district on 10 May 1899. He also owned The Lodge in the Ixopo district. The Lodge was an amalgamation of 3 pieces of land: Ogle (60 acres situate near the Ixopo stream), subdivision C of Courthill (45 acres, 2 roods and 5 perches) and the remainder of subdivision C of Ixopo (94 acres, 2 roods and 16 perches). All held by deed of transfer dated 11 August 1920. This farm had belonged to his father John. On 2 February 1929 he bought Valhalla which was lot no. 39 of the Dronk Vlei Reserve (584 acres 3 roods 11 perches). In the County of Alexander: he owned Kloofend (in extent 671 acres, 3 roods, 14 perches) and The Corner (318 acres 26408 square feet), both held by deed of transfer dated 13 August 1931. He owned properties in Krugersdorp, Durban and Kokstad. He also owned the farm New Wales in the Umzimkulu district. Lena was the sister of Johanna and Jacoba Van Whye. After Lena's death Sydney, Lily, Lucy and Alexander went to live at Riverside and were raised by their Aunt Lily Cole, until their father remarried. Alexander was known as Boebese (Lion). At the time of his death Alexander was living at 8 Montcalm Road, Morningside, Durban. James Houston of Vlei Villa, Creighton was his executor.
