From Northern Mine Research Society: Obituary

  • Educated at St. Andrew's and Glasgow Universities
  • Worked at the offices of the Professor W.J.M. Rankin, and in Scottish coal mines.
  • He then entered the laboratory of the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Company in Glasgow.
  • 1875 appointed as metallurgical superintendent of the Rio Tinto Mines in Spain; in charge of the cementation and reduction works; designed and superintended the construction of extensive plant.
  • 1881 in charge of silver mines and reduction works in Mexico.
  • 1883 in Portugal he was engaged in developing and managing several copper mines.
  • 1890 practised as a consulting mining engineer in association with Mr. W. Ferdinand and Mr. G.D. Delprat.
  • 1895 went to California for Messrs. Matheson & Co., and acted as general manager of the Mountain Copper Co.
  • 1897 in England as a consulting mining engineer.
  • 1902 elected a Member of the Institution of Mining Engineers
  • 1903 he entered into partnership with Mr. C.H. Stewart, A.R.S.M., as Alexander Hill & Stewart
  • 1909 Member of the Council of the I.M.E in March.
  • 1912 24 April (aged 56) at his residence in Northwood after a period of ill-health extending over two years.

Abridged Prospectus

1. This Company is formed for the purpose of acquiring and working on an extended scale the well-known and remarkably rich copper mines belonging to The Mountain Mines, Limited, situated at Iron Mountain, Shasta County, in the State of California, the smelting works connected therewith, and other extensive property, as well as the entire interest in the railway to the mines and also the refining work in the neighbourhood of New York owned by the New Jersey Metal Refining Works, Limited. ...

4. ... The quantity of ore contained in this body of Sulphide is estimated by Mr Hill at little less than 1,500,000 (1,338,183) tons, and in my opinion this estimate is safe and trustworthy." . . . "I think it reasonably certain that the larger portion, probably three-fourths of the ore now developed contains on an average more than 7.5% per cent. of copper, and that the remainder carries from 2 to 4 per cent. copper." ...

7. The Mines have been most ably opened up by Mr Alexander Hill, the Engineer and Resident Manager of the Company, who has had great mining and engineering experience in various parts of the world, and has displayed conspicuous energy and ability in the business generally.

Reports On Mines.

Reports on the Properties have been made by the following gentlemen:

Mr Alexander Hill. A.M.I.C.E., M.E., F.C.S., etc., late General Manager of the Mountain Copper Company (Limited), and now the Consulting Engineer of the Globe Minerals Exploration Company (Limited). Mr. Hill was employed to report upon and develop the Mountain Copper Company's mines in California, and it was on his advice that that property was taken up. In the Prospectus of the Mountain Copper Company (Limited), Mr. Hill was referred to in the following terms:

"The Mines have been most ably opened up by Mr. Alexander Hill, the Engineer and Resident Manager of the Company, who has had great Mining and Engineering experience in various parts of the world, and has displayed conspicuous energy and ability in the business generally." ...

Directors' Anticipation of Dividends.

From the statements set forth in the reports referred to, the Directors feel confident that so soon as the additional plant recommended by Mr. Hill is erected, the Profit Will be sufficient to provide a dividend on the whole Share Capital of the Company of not less than 25 per cent per annum, taking copper at the average price of the last twelve years, say £50 per ton.
