Alice E. (Merritt) LaGrove

Death: Feb. 3, 1890

Twice married and twice divorced Alice Eastwood Merritt was the daughter of Mary Eastwood Walters and Isaac Merritt Singer. Mary Walters adopted the surname "Merritt" for herself and daughter. At age 18 her father arranged her marriage to W. A. P. LaGrove, with whom she had a son. They divorced and she was briefly married to a Mr. Bangs. The marriage ended in divorce a few months later; she took her first husband's name. Like her father, she developed a passion for acting and hiring her own company; toured under the name of Agnes Leonard.
