ANDREW MARKLE

A GENEALOGICAL SKETCH OF THE DESCENDANTS
OF ANDREW AND ANNA CHRISTINA (PALMER) COOK 1769-1970

by John and Eileen (Shepherd) Houser
For: The Library of The Genealogical Society of Pennsylvania with the compliments of John and Eileen (Shepherd) Houser.
THE HISTORICAL SOCIETY OF PENNSYLVANIA Presented by Mrs. John H. House: January 11, 1971 The ANDREW COOK Genealogy

Pages 169 to 173

  • 169 II-3: COOK, ELIZABETH; the second child of Andrew and Anna Christina (Palmer) Cook, born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania on May 3rd, 1791, journeyed to Ancaster, Ontario with her parents when the family emigrated to Canada in 1804.

Nothing more is heard of Elizabeth until her marriage to a man with the French name of “ COMPEIGN ”. As mentioned in the review of her brother, Jacob's life (II-600), Jacob had strongly disapproved of this marriage for reasons now long obscure.

Several months after this marriage, Elizabeth's husband, "Compeign" was killed in a logging accident, and their son, LUKE, was born on November 3rd, 1818, after his father's death. (Family Tradition has it that Luke was born either at Cooksville, Ontario or "MuddyYork” now Toronto; however, his Death Certificate gives the location of his birth as New York State - this could be an error.)

Jacob made the statement that Elizabeth's son " will be my son and bear my name," and he legally adopted the infant Luke, and in all later references, Elizabeth's son bears the name "Luke Cook."

According to Family Tradition, Elizabeth married again four times, but the records recently brought to light, together with the recollection of a living granddaughter, maintain that after her first child, Luke, was born, Elizabeth married ANDREW MARKLE with whom she lived until both died more than fifty years later in 1884. Three daughters, Irene, Rachel, and Sarah Ann, are the known children born of Elizabeth's last marriage.

Andrew and Elizabeth (Cook) (Compeign) Markle moved into Nottawasaga township, Simcoe County, Ontario with their three daughters in 1834. Here, just east of the present town of Collingwood, they opened only the second Tavern to appear between Barrie and St. Vincent Township. (The latter was just beginning to be settled at that date.)

In about 1856, the Markle’s moved to St. Vincent Township, and occupied one acre of Lot No. 29, Concession 7, where Andrew Markle was a self-employed Shoemaker. The balance of the 100 acre farm on which they located was owned by William Hallock (James Hallock, a son of William married Sarah Ann Markle, and they were destined to have 18 children. The other two daughters, Irene and Rachel, married Mathew Lake and John Campaign, respectively, but specific dates, location of settlement, and descendants are yet to be determined.)

[PLEASE NOTE]: While the text provides long waited for insight in more general terms of the "how and when" explaining James DeGroat Hallock and Sarah Ann Elizabeth Markle becoming first acquainted; and this same text has [proven otherwise exceptionally accurate both in detail and descriptions]... but here and in this specific instance the precise Dating Chronology offered by the Cook compilers must be "Late". There is a Marriage Register identifying James Hallock and Sarah Ann' Markle from Nottawasaga upon the event of their marriage - June 6, 1846. So that would mean by 1856 James and Sarah Ann had already been married going on a decade. But to be fair: the text does not claim an explicit and fixed date but rather prefaces the year 1856 with " In about..." Jlphawn

Much of the confusion concerning birth, marriage, and death dates in the earlier years results from the fact that there were no Provincial or Federal requirements existent enforcing formal entry of such dates. These did not appear on the scene until 1869, and prior to that date, one must depend on information recorded in Family Bibles or from other miscellaneous sources. Even after 1869, Church fires, etc. often caused the loss of pertinent documents unavailable from other sources. (Such fires did, in fact, destroy some records in Meaford of the period in question.)

1:- Harding, Frank; Meaford, Ontario Personal records.

We have persisted in using the name " Markle " throughout this sketch even though there is some reason to believe that it may, on occasion, have been spelled differently. The Town Clerk of Meaford, for instance, advises that Andrew Markle was at some times on the Assessment Roll as "Markle" " Maracle ” and " Miricle." Mr. Frank Harding, a Historian of the Meaford area, states that an early article in the Meaford Monitor carried a notice of the death on Sept. 8th, 1884 of Andrew " Maracle ” (this is the spelling recalled by one descendant). A fourth spelling appeared on the 1873 Assessment Roll, where Andrew's surname appears as " Marcle."

Pg 171

III-4 Andrew Markle died at Meaford, Ontario on September 8th, 1884, at the age of 87. Five days later, his wife of over 50 years, Elizabeth (Cook)(Compeign)Markle died in her 94th year, on September 13th, 1884. They are both buried at Meaford, Ontario, but we were unable to locate their graves. The district of St. Vincent, where they resided had several small local rural cemeteries, but all of this part of St. Vincent, about 20,000 acres, was taken over by the Department of Defense in the War years. Still used as the Armoured Vehicles Firing Range, it is closed to the public.

The Death Certificates show Andrew's date of passing as September 8th, 1884, and Elizabeth's as September 13th, 1884, both registered, however, in the name “Markle”. This, together with the old family records recently located, is our reason for selecting the spelling version we did. It would appear that these four versions of the spelling of the name “Maracle”, “Marcle”, “Miricle”, and “Markle” obviously result from confusing handwriting and spelling, compounded by the different interpretations by reader or listener.

[NOTE] The explanation as offered may well represent the actual and factual issue at hand - however - it does nothing to relieve the equally possible problem that its Markle that's wrong! Jlphawn

COOK, LUKE; the only child of Elizabeth Cook by her first marriage to “Compeign” , was born in New York State, U.S.A. in 1818, according to his Death Certificate as purchased from the Office of the Registrar General, Toronto, Ontario. This information runs counter to Family Tradition which holds that he was born either at Cooksville, Ontario, or at "MuddyYork” (now Toronto). His father having died before his birth, he was adopted by his uncle Jacob Cook of Cooksville, Ontario, and was raised as Jacob's son.

Little is known of Luke's activities after he grew up and, although his obituary refers to his having spent some time in Nova Scotia, this appears to be unlikely. A granddaughter recalls that Luke once lived at Winterbourne, Ontario, near Guelph, and this is substantiated by the fact that in 1845, Luke was married at Guelph, Ontario to MARY HAMILTON. Mary, born at Cumberland, Scotland in 1827, came to Canada with her parents when just two years old.

(According to an early entry in Luke Cook's Family Bible, now owned by his Great Grandson, Harold E. Cook, Mary's mother, Margaret (Hosse) Hamilton, was born in Sterlingshire Castle, Scotland.)

Luke and Mary settled on property in Norfolk County, Ontario, which was bought for the young couple (according to Family Tradition) by Luke's uncle Jacob Cook. Luke, already recognized at the time as an area Merchant, also purchased 25 acres, the East half of the West Quarter of Lot No. 175: South of Talbot Road, Township of Middleton, Norfolk County, in 1858. He sold this same property in 1865 to one, Carl Fick.

Witnesses to the to the sale were two of Luke's children, Henry Wilkinson and Martha J. Cook

In 1873, Luke purchased 50 acres, the South Half of the North Half of Lot No. 185, North of Talbot Road in Middleton Township, Norfolk County. This Property, also known as Lot 44, Coal Road, was originally a part of Crown Land granted in 1833 to Robert DeCew- sold by him to Henry Sovereen, and then Purchased by Luke Cook.

Jacob Cook, Luke's adoptive father and one of Jacob's sons (Miles Washington Cook) also acquired land in the immediate area. Jacob owned 100 acres of Lot No. 150, North of Talbot Road in 1868, and Miles Washington Cook Owned100 acres of the North East half of the same Lot.

Luke and Mary raised a family of seven children in Norfolk County; Henry Wilkinson, Martha Jane, Mary Josephine, Emmanuel Rufus Francis, Miles Washington Hamilton, Cyrus Milton, and Norman Ellsworth.

Luke was, at one time, a member of Ridout Lodge No. 95, no longer listed in Masonic records. He was also the founder, in 1869, and the First Worshipful Master of the Frederick Lodge, No. 217, A.F. & A.M., Delhi, Ontario (then known as Fredericksburg). He served as Master five more times, his last year in that function being in 1887. Luke's Masonic regalia is in the possession of the same Lodge today, having been presented to it by one of his grandsons.

Luke was a Justice of the Peace in Delhi, and a Government Agent for the issuance of Marriage Licenses. The Delhi newspaper of that period, “The British Canadian” carried an article in the December 26th, 1894 issue, just after Luke’s death -

“On Monday night last at Grit Headquarters, there was a lively and interesting scene between some twenty hungry office seekers after the very important office of issuer of marriage licenses, made vacant by the death of Luke Cook.” When Luke held these Civic offices, he also operated a store at Delhi. His grandson, Clarence Cook (IV-17) now in his 99th year, recalls that Luke had a small store on the main street of Delhi, and that he was also a cobbler, making shoes and harnesses. The store was destroyed by fire in 1878, and it appears that Luke did not rebuild the store, but moved the family to his farm in Middleton Township (the second piece of property he purchased) and this became the family residence.

  • Pg 173 IV-5 Luke's granddaughter, Ethel Clarke (IV-157) now 91, recalls Luke's role as a leader of the Reform Party in local politics, and states he was known as a "great speaker." Luke's death occurred in 1894 The following year, Mary died, and the circumstances surrounding her passing are described in two short news articles found in the "Norfolk Reformer” newspaper, under ‘Delhi Notes’. The first article in this weekly publication is in the issue of May 30th, 1895 –

“Mrs. Luke Cook fell last Saturday from the top of the stairway and was badly shaken up and dislocated her shoulder. Under the able treatment of Dr. Wood, she will soon recover.” In the very next issue, that of June 6th, 1895, the second article appeared:

“Mrs. Luke Cook, widow of Luke Cook, Esq. of Delhi, died last week of injuries received by a fall. Her remains were interred on Saturday.”

Both Luke and Mary are buried in Delhi Cemetery, and the tombstone marking their graves has an inset portrait of Luke.

PLEASE NOTE: Viewing Luke's original document image - his death record in Ontario Deaths Registration Record shows the Signed Informant as: NORMAN COOK one of Luke and Mary's identified sons. - an argument for or against the accuracy of New York as LUKE'S birthplace could be forwarded on that premise.

Hi,

I am inquiring with a question (as your comment encouraged) regarding the ascending Ancestry you show for two of my Ancestors. One (Elizabeth Cook) you have no parentage for, and for her spouse (Andrew Markle) identified as his parents are different from what I have.....and have commonly seen...

I am curious as to our conflict.

Hello,

This family was posted several years ago, and I have to look back into a pile of old messages and records.

I see that some say that Andrew was son of Abraham Maracle by wife Barbara Shaver... then following this back, I see questionable sources connecting to Catholic churches in Germany, whereas I believe all of this family were of Evangelical (Protestant) faith (Evangelisch). There are definite connections to Pennsylvania, which points to either Loyalist or Quaker lineages...

So I will try and find the old messages and will try and get back to you.

Whom do you think, were his parents?

To me it appears, the question asked above.....is indeed of relevant importance. The other being: what evidence is there that ELIZABETH MARKLE was ELIZABETH COOK?
