About Anne Notte

Not the same as Anne Gold & not the wife of Hugh Gold, Grocer of London

  • Anne Notte is the youngest daughter of Thomas Noote and his wife Elizabeth Olden [previously in a relationship with John Winthropp]
  • Anne is listed last on the 1636 funeral certificate of her father Thomas Notte. Her sister Elizabeth is shown as married to Henry Becher, so it can be assumed that Anne [like her sisters Frances & Mary] is unmarried.
  • it is often stated that in 1621/2 Thomas Notte sold his English Manor to Anne Gold, widow of Hugh Gold of London [or daughter of Hugh Gold] & furthermore that this Anne is his granddaughter, daughter of his daughter Anne Notte. As Thomas married Elizabeth Olden in 1614 at the earliest, any daughter from that marriage would have been a very small child in 1621, much less any grandchildren! Even if Thomas had married as a 16 year old, he could only have had a 20 year old daughter at the most & certainly no grandchildren older than a toddler. His funeral certificate does not list other heirs. He did have an Uncle Thomas Notte of whom nothing is known, so it is possible he had a daughter/granddaughter Anne.
  • Hugh's widow Anne is often said to be the daughter of Thomas Notte [daughter of his daughter Anne Notte], but this is not even remotely possible as Thomas Notte only married his wife Elizabeth Olden in 1614 at the earliest as her previous husband died in 1613. Of their four children, Anne was the youngest, so could not have been born before 1617 & probably several years later. She was therefore probably not even born when her purported husband died, much less able to have a daughter who purchased Long Ditton in 1621/2
