Archbishop Eskil made the church to a part of the rest of Europe Eskil is considered to be one of the great archbishops of Lund. He led the archdiocese of Lund from 1138 until 1177, with some interruptions. Eskil was probably born about 1100. He belonged to a family which was allied with the Danish royal family. As Archbishop, he was an important ecclesiastical person who founded many monasteries. In the early 1150s Eskil visited the famous Bernard of Clairvaux and when Eskil 1177 put down his bishop rod, it was to Clairvaux he traveled and spent his last years. Eskil also had his final resting place in the monastery at Clairvaux. Archbishop Eskil's importance was that he helped the church in the Nordic countries into becaming an integral part of the international church community.

Nephew of Asger. Was bishop of Roskilde 1134-1137. Consecrated and opened the cathedral in Lund 1145. After his episcopal ministry he retired at the monastery of Clairvaux.

Eskil räknas som en av de stora ärkebiskoparna i Lund. Han ledde det lundensiska ärkestiftet från 1138 och fram till 1177, med vissa avbrott. Eskil föddes troligen omkring år 1100. Han tillhörde en släkt som var befryndad med det danska kungahuset. Som ärkebiskop var han en betydande kyrkofurste och han grundade många kloster. I början av 1150-talet besökte Eskil den berömde Bernhard av Clairvaux och när Eskil 1177 nedlade sin biskopsstav, var det till Clairvaux han reste och där tillbringade sina sista år. Eskil fick också sitt sista vilorum i klosterkyrkan i Clairvaux. Ärkebiskop Eskils stora betydelse var att han bidrog till att kyrkan i Norden kom att bli en integrerad del av den internationella kyrkogemenskapen.

Brorson till Ascer. Hade tidigare varit biskop i Roskilde 1134-1137. Invigde Lunds domkyrka 1145. Drog sig efter biskopstidden tillbaka till klostret i Clairvaux.
